깊은 영적 울림을 들려주는 우크라이나 작곡가 발렌틴 실베스트로프는 2014년 유로마이단 시위를 목격하고 슬픔에 잠긴 음악 [마이단 2014]를 작곡하게 된다. 자신들의 국가, 진혼곡, 비가가 어우러진 4개의 주기의 순환으로 구성한 이 작품은 작곡가의 “성가”, “종교적 작품” 음반에서 함께 했던 미콜라 호브디치가 이끄는 키이우 체임버 콰이어에 의해서 2016년 녹음되었다.
유로마이단 사건은 결국 2022년 러시아의 침공으로까지 이어지는 우크라이나 고난의 역사가 되었는데 결국 실베스트로프도 고향 키이우를 떠나 베를린으로 피신했다. 이를 예견한 듯 애잔한 기도로 이어지는 가슴 뭉클한 합창을 놓칠 수 없다.

He had written Maidan - rapt, raw, emotive choral music - after the “Euromaidan” demonstrations of 2014; the Kyiv Chamber Choir recorded it in the all-enveloping atmosphere of the city’s St Michael’s Cathedral in 2016. Now it has overwhelming significance.
