힐라리온 알페예프는 러시아 정교회 모스크바 총대교구의 주교이다. 젊은 시절 모스크바 콘서바토리에서 작곡을 배웠고, 성직자가 된 이후에도 작곡 활동을 계속하였다. 그의 대표작이 바로 독창과 합창, 오케스트라를 위한 그랜드 오라토리오<마태 수난곡>으로 2006년 작곡되어, 2007년 모스크바 콘서바토리 그레이트홀에서 기립 박수를 받은 유명한 작품이다. 동양과 서양 종교 음악의 전통에서 영감을 얻은 작품으로 신성함 울림과 아름다운 합창이 뛰어난 종교합창곡이다. 거장 지휘자 페도세예프는 차이코프스키 오케스트라를 이끌고 2008년 로마에서 본 작품 연주로 극찬을 받았다. 2010년 레코딩.
