사회주의 사실주의의 주요 추종자였던 카발레프스키는 쇼팽의 전주곡을 모델로 러시아 민속음악의 선율을 차용한 24개의 전주곡을 완성하였다. 초기작인 4개의 전주곡과 푸가에 대한 이 작곡가의 깊은 이해를 보여주는 6개의 전주곡과 푸가가 함께 수록되었다. 2003년 아르헤리치 콩쿠르 우승자이자 작곡가의 피아노 소나타 음반으로 호평을 얻었던 알렉산드르 도신이 연주를 맡았다.
