베르디는 그의 유명한 오페라 작품들 외에도 탁월한 레퀴엠으로도 잘 알려져 있다. 이 작품은 이탈리아 작가이자 민족주의자이며, 베르디가 존경했던 몇 안되는 사람 중의 한 사람으로 알려진 알레산드로 만쪼니 (Alessandro Manzoni)를 기리기 위해 작곡되었다. 그 유명한 '최후의 심판일'의 드라마틱한 파워와 작품의 솔로 패시지의 고상한 서정성은 보통의 레퀴엠 미사곡보다 오페라의 많은 요소를 가져왔다는 평가를 받고 있다.
