피아노협주곡 1번의 유명세에 완전히 가려진 비운의 작품이지만, 차이코프스키의 두 번째 피아노협주곡의 느린 악장에서 드러나는 아름다운 선율미는 각별하다. 피아노, 바이올린, 첼로가 만들어내는 농밀한 서정미만으로도 이 협주곡은 일청의 가치가 있다. 글로켄슈필과 탕부랭 등의 독특한 울림을 활용한 콘체르토 판타지 역시 부당하게 평가절하되었던 흥미로운 작품.
